Crowns and veneers are restorative treatments that renew the appearance and function of damaged teeth. While they serve similar functions, crowns and veneers offer a few key differences:
A dental crown fits over the visible part of a damaged tooth. It looks and functions just like the tooth it replaces. If you have a cracked, misshapen, or worn tooth, a crown restores its shape and size while protecting it from further damage.
Veneers are thin porcelain shells permanently glued to the surface of your teeth to change their shape, size, and/or color. These custom-made restorations look natural and are stain-resistant.
Crowns and veneers cover dental flaws while protecting your teeth from further injury. Both restorations are ideal treatments to fix dental concerns like:
Dental crowns are also recommended to cover teeth with large fillings or those that have undergone root canal therapy.
Traditional crowns and veneers take two appointments to place. However, Dr. Artaza and the team offer CEREC® same-day restorations to place your crowns or veneers in a single visit.
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic) technology uses special software and an on-site milling machine to plan and produce your new restoration from the comfort of Dr. Artaza’s office.
The process for planning and placing dental restorations, like crowns and bridges, is the same for traditional crowns and bridges and CEREC restorations.
First, Dr. Artaza prepares your teeth for their new restorations. For crowns, he reshapes your affected tooth to create extra room for the crown. When prepping for veneers, he removes a small portion of your tooth enamel, allowing the veneer to blend seamlessly with your smile.
After preparing your teeth, Dr. Artaza and the team take impressions from which your custom crowns or veneers will be made. For CEREC restorations, he uses a milling machine to make them right in his office. Traditional crowns and bridges are created in an outside lab and take 2-3 weeks to be delivered back to the dentist.
Once your crowns or veneers are ready, Dr. Artaza places them on your teeth. He makes any necessary adjustments for the right fit and cements them in place.
