Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable replacement teeth. They can replace some or all of your teeth. Dentures are an affordable way to restore your bite and tooth function if you have several missing teeth. With the advanced technology in his office, Dr. Artaza and his team can create customized, natural-looking dentures.

Are there different types of dentures?

Dr. Artaza and his team offer three types of dentures:

Full dentures

Full or complete dentures replace all of your teeth. Dr. Artaza removes any natural teeth you might have left to begin rebuilding your smile. Full dentures are made up of artificial teeth attached to a pink acrylic base that looks like your natural gum tissue. The device adheres to the roof of your mouth to hold the dentures in place.

Partial dentures

If you have some healthy teeth left, a partial denture replaces those teeth that you’ve lost. Unlike full dentures, partial dentures don’t cover the roof of your mouth. Instead, your healthy teeth are used as support to anchor the partial denture in place.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are held securely in place by dental implants. Dental implants are thin titanium posts that replace your natural tooth roots. Dr. Artaza surgically inserts implants into your jawbone and connects your dentures to them once your mouth heals from surgery.

How are dentures made?

Dentures usually require extensive planning to ensure they’re the perfect fit for your mouth. Poor-fitting dentures can cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty chewing, so it’s important to find the correct fit right from the start.

Dr. Artaza and his team use highly accurate impressions of your mouth to create your dentures. They then use a wax model to check the fit. If the wax model feels uncomfortable or ill-fitting, the team takes new impressions to create a better fit.

Once your dentures are ready, Dr. Artaza shows you how to use them. He’ll also give you tips on how to care for them. Once placed, your dentures should feel snug and form-fitting without irritating your gums.
